Mimi and I look forward to seeing your video's/ pictures of your student council activity board challenges! Remember each post gets you 1 HOUSE TOKEN!!! I am excited to have earned HARVARD 1 token!

Thank you student council for making these video's I might try and make Polly's and Lottie's crepes next!

Daffodil Day Quiz Participants

Kia ora Whānau,

We had a great time on Friday with our weekly quiz. Everyone tried to find something yellow to wear, with the creative side of both teachers and students coming out!

It was great to see some other family members helping out with finding the answers to our current event questions.

We also used this time to recognise a number of students who had worked really hard over the last week, blogging their learning and touching base with the teachers in the hub.
We gave out some digital certificates and these will be printed and handed out when we are back at school.

Tu meke koutou!

We look forward to seeing you all at the next Hangout:
10am - Harvard and Mustang
11am - Kittyhawk and Skyhawk

The links to the meetings will be sent out one hour before your meeting begins.

Have a great weekend!

Second Ruru Hangout

Today we had a challenge during our Hangouts:

To draw a picture on a given topic in only one minute!

First up, we had Harvard and Mustang. They had to draw.. an elephant!

Next, Kittyhawk and Skyhawk had to draw a crocodile.

If you look carefully, you'll be able to see some guests to our Ruru Hangouts.

We extend this challenge out to parents - what does your one-minute animal look like?

Have a great day, Ruru!

First Day of Hangouts!

 Kia ora koutou,

Today we had our first Ruru Google Hangout! The teachers met first to talk about what we will be sharing in the Hangout, then allowed you in one by one.

The first Hangout was with Harvard and Mustang.

We got the heads up that it was Sofi's birthday, so we all sang to her. It was hectic with people singing in different keys and at different times, but we managed!

We then had our Hangout with Kittyhawk and Skyhawk.
The lovely Adele and Michelle joined us and we sang to Michelle as well, as it was her birthday too!

It was great to see you all and we look forward to seeing you again on Wednesday.
Look out for the next invitation and possibly... a challenge to bring with you?

Have a great day and see you soon!

What's happening in Week 5!

 Hi Everyone,

We hope you are all well and have enjoyed the past few days at home.

The decision has been made that we are staying Lockdown Level 4 for at least the next two days. This means we will not be at school until the Lockdown Level has been brought down to Level 2.

We have been busy getting some things together for you to work on while in Level 4. This will all be added to our Ruru Learning Site on the Home page and most of this week’s work will be continuing on with what we have already started. We are also including a Google Form for you to fill out so that we can plan some activities around what you enjoy doing or enjoyed doing last year during Lockdown.

This week will be hosting our first Google Hangouts on Monday and Wednesday and they will be in House Groups. These Hangouts will just be to see how you are doing and what you have been up to.

If you are in Mustang or Harvard, your Hangout will be at 10am on Monday and Wednesday.

If you are in Kittyhawk or Skyhawk, your Hangout will be at 11am on Monday and Wednesday.

We will be sending out an invitation to your school email address, an hour before your Hangout. If you jump onto the Hangout at your House Group’s time, then a teacher will let you into the Hangout.

If there are any other notices that are important, we will update the ‘Notices’ slide on the Lockdown slide deck. You can email any of the teachers with questions about your learning as well.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow at the Hangout!

Stay safe and be kind :)

From the Ruru Teachers.

School Closure - Level 4

Hi everybody,

As you know, we have gone into Level 4 Lockdown for the next three days due to a community case of Covid in Auckland and all schools are closed. Today please enjoy some down-time with your family. The sun is out so make the most of being home together. Go for a walk, watch a movie, play some board games or read your favourite book.

From tomorrow our Wigram Primary School Home Learning Site is live again just like last year. There is lots to see and do on here. You also access our Ruru Learning Site. There is always something you can be working away on here:
- Your Poetry Anthology
- Environmental Study
- Brush up on your basic facts by revisiting our 'Hot spot' or using Prototec.
We are also lucky enough to have our free access to Matific for the term so challenge yourself and have a go at the many activities the teachers have loaded onto here for you.

Remember to be kind to your family and help out whenever you can. If we are still in Lockdown next week we will post notices here for you and email your parents as well.

Kind regards,
Ruru Teachers

Worm farm/ Compost Bin

By Tayla H and Tyler B

Wigram Primary School is excited to introduce to you our Worm Farm and Compost Bin. Over the past term the Garden club, Eco club and Mr Rob worked hard to build and create our very own worm farm. We used recyclable materials to build the Worm Farm/ Compost Bin and we had lots of fun making it.

The children and Mr Rob had to get the recycled wood, measure and then cut it. (With Mr Robs supervision). We used levellers to make sure the wood was balanced then we drilled the wood to make the outline of the bins. We also painted them to make the bins waterproof.

Why did Wigram School build a Worm Farm/ Compost Bin?

We wanted to cut back on our waste and to stop food going into the landfill (as it takes much longer for food to decompose). We also want to have a good and healthy garden. Our worm farm will produce worm tea (worm pee) which is good for the garden because it helps veggies grow. Our compost bin will produce next year's soil from the breaking down of all the weeds, and plants that we mix with the cardboard. (N-nitrogen, P-phosphorus, K -potassium) is a byproduct of this, which helps our plants grow.

Make sure to check out our wonderful garden area, next time you visit Wigram Primary School.

What goes into the worm farm

  • Egg shells

  • Old coffee grounds and tea leaves

  • Fruit and veggies

  • News  paper and paper towels

  •  Hair clippings

  • Vacuum dust

What does not go into the worm farm

  • Citrus foods

  • Tomatoes

  • Dairy foods

  • Greasy foods

  • Bread and pasta

  • Fish and meat

  • Garden waste

Our Amazing Bloggers!

Ruru has been working really hard, right up to the end of a busy term.

This week's Reading focus was looking at Inspirational People around the world. We think about what that person did and why they are considered inspirational. We also thought of our own inspirational messages to share with people.

These people did a fantastic job in learning about their chosen person, creating different DLOs to show what they have learnt and sharing their learning on their blogs.

Of these students, there are some special mentions...

Polly's Reading Post about Anne Frank

Hannaneh's Reading Post about Anne Frank

Jaydah's Reading Post about Anne Frank

Karaitiana's Reading Post about Anne Frank

Amelia's Reading Post about Albert Einsten

Lucas's Reading Post about Nelson Mandela

Travis's Reading Post about Amelia Earhart

Check our their amazing blog posts and make sure you comment on them!

Have a fantastic winter break and see you all next term :)

Huritini Student Council!!!
-Well done Vadim and Karaitiana.
(Click on the photo to watch a video).

The schools in the Halswell district (Wigram, Halswell, Oaklands, Aidenfield Christian School and Night stream all presented a proposal to the Christchurch city council community board to apply for funding to put signage up at Westlake park/ reserve. This is to inform our community around nesting seasons and how to respect the wild life that lives there.

We are very proud of our school and Karaitiana and Vadim for participating in this meeting.
